THREE LAWS LETHAL was a Wall Street Journal pick for Best SF Novel of 2019!

THE PLACE, NEW YORK CITY; the time, the very near future. The streets are swarming with self-driving cars, and the competition between two entrepreneurs for this cutthroat futuristic business grows increasingly fierce. But when the escalating technological warfare produces superintelligent AI computers that use data to decide who should live and die, the results are explosive…and deadly.

It is left to young Naomi Sumner, inventor of the virtual world in which the AIs train, to recognize that the supercomputers are developing goals of their own—goals for which they are willing to kill. But can she stop these inhuman machines before it is too late? More importantly, does she want to?

THREE LAWS LETHAL takes the reader on a wild ride in a world that is still imaginary…for now…

“David Walton’s Three Laws Lethal gives the reader exciting insights into the threats and the promises that are coming our way.”
Vernor Vinge, multiple Hugo award-winning author of A Deepness in the Sky

WINNER OF THE CAMPBELL AWARD FOR BEST NOVEL

Zombie books just aren’t creepy enough.

They’re exciting, don’t get me wrong. When some drooling dead guy is breaking down your door to sink his teeth into your flesh, it’ll get your blood pumping. But the thing is, he’s dead. He’s not a person anymore. You can shoot him in the head and not even feel guilty about it.

But what if the zombies weren’t mindless? What if they were smarter than you? What if you let them into your house because you didn’t know there was anything wrong, because they didn’t even know they were zombies, and when they stabbed you in the back and infected your family, they truly believed they were doing the right thing?

My zombies aren’t really zombies at all, not in the classic undead sense, although they’ve been infected with a fungus that sends microscopic tendrils to set up shop in their brains. The fungus doesn’t turn them into moaning, decaying corpses, though. It’s much more subtle than that.

At first, it even seems to be beneficial. The fungus streamlines certain pathways of the brain and makes the hosts smarter, with better memory and learning ability and communication skills. Researchers think it could cure Alzheimer’s and dementia. Kids start taking it as a drug to do better on their exams.  But the more beneficial the fungus appears, the more committed its hosts become to protecting it and spreading it to every human on Earth.

And why wouldn’t they? It’s a good thing, right? And if they have to kill anyone that gets in their way, that’s just what’s best for humanity. Or for the fungus. Whatever.

My zombie horde is spreading the plague on purpose, and they’re smarter than you are.

Read the book the Wall Street Journal said “brought hard sci-fi roaring back to life.”

SUPERPOSITION is a quantum physics murder mystery with the breathless speed and mind-bending plot twists of some of my favorite films, like Inception, The Prestige, and Minority Report.

It follows Jacob Kelley, a retired physicist visited by an old colleague who waves a gun around and babbles about an alien quantum intelligence. The mystery deepens when Jacob discovers that the man had been murdered in an underground bunker the night before. Jacob is arrested for the murder and put on trial. As the details of the crime slowly come to light, the weave of reality becomes ever more tangled, twisted by a miraculous new technology and a quantum creature unconstrained by the normal limits of space and matter. With the help of his daughter, Alessandra, Jacob must find the true murderer before the creature destroys his family and everything he loves.  As the Wall Street Journal said, “This is the way sci-fi ought to be.”

The book is available in trade paperback, e-book, and audio book formats.  It stands on its own as a complete story, but there is a sequel!  SUPERSYMMETRY (September, 2015) picks up the story fifteen years later.

I’ll let RT Book Reviews tell you what it’s about:  “This sequel to Superposition is just as excellent as the first.  Fast-paced, mind-bending, super-scientific yet fully accessible and very understandable to the layman reader.  Full of new possibilities and probabilities, Supersymmetry gives readers a peek into what the future may hold and the cost that comes with it.  This is a science fiction novel full of humanity and all its inherent beauty and ugliness.”

QUINTESSENCE was published by Tor Books in 2013. It’s an alternate history/fantasy set in the Age of Exploration, full of arcane science, alchemy, human dissection, sea monsters, betrayal, torture, religious controversy, and magic. Scientists and explorers gamble with their lives to turn lead into gold and bring the dead back to life. In Europe, the magic is thin, but at the edge of the world, where the stars reach down close to the Earth, wonders abound. This drives the bravest among them to the alluring Western Ocean, where they just might find the secret to life and immortality.

An alchemist, Christopher Sinclair, who cares about only one thing: quintessence, a substance he believes will grant immortality and magical powers, has a ship.

Fleeing an inquisition for illegal dissection, Stephen Parris, the king’s physician, follows Sinclair to an island that perches on the edge of the world, bringing his daughter Catherine with him against his wife’s furious protests. The island is teeming with fantastical animals whose secrets they explore, using extracted powders and tinctures to make bread from sand, turn salt water into fresh, and–just possibly–find the secret of immortality.
If you want a sample, go ahead and read the first three chapters.

q2_frontcover_smallThe sequel to Quintessence, QUINTESSENCE SKY continues the story of Horizon, the island perched on the edge of the flat Earth.  A strange fire burns in the heavens, weakening the power of quintessence and sparking tensions between humans and manticores.  Catherine and Matthew push deeper into the island, trying to discover its secrets before their people turn to stone.  In Europe, a Jesuit priest unlocks the secrets of quintessence, but hesitates to hand the power to his king. He must work together with Matthew and Catherine across thousands of miles to rescue a young Princess Elizabeth from death and save the Horizon colony from destruction.

TERMINAL MIND, my first novel, won the 2008 Philip K. Dick Award for the best paperback science fiction novel of the year!  It was great fun to write, and I’ve been very pleased with the result.  It’s been a thrilling ride to see it make the rounds and be read by so many people.  If you haven’t given it a try yet, I hope you will.

It takes place in a world of technological miracles: buildings can be grown in hours, communication flashes through light beams, and flesh can be molded to any whim.  The story is about a boy whose mind has been sliced into the worldwide computer network–an organic network integrated into people’s very brains.  Aware of nothing outside of his virtual existence, he’s a slave to a man who wields tremendous power through him, able to see through the eyes of almost anyone he chooses and steal their secrets.  The result is a race between those who would use the child to dominate, and those who would see him destroyed… and the child’s mother, racing to find him, for whom both options are unthinkable.  Order now from Amazon, get it on your favorite e-book reader, or find the audio book version on Audible.

Hello, Mr. David Walton! Thanks so much for supplying me once again with another piece of literary adventure that I thoroughly am enjoying! I am enthralled with this historical, fantastical world you have created- you have melded both character development and suspense splendidly. Catherine is a girl after my own heart and I want to give Chichirico a hug (Can you hug a manticore?) I appreciate Sinclairs’ layered character… an altogether human, almost-villain, seeker of truth . Enjoy your success. Blessings to you and your family!

Thanks so much, Danita! This kind of feedback makes my day. Please tell your friends! Most people don’t know the book exists, and the only way it spreads is through word of mouth. I’m so glad you’re enjoying it.

I just finished Quintessence. I read a lot of books (about 125-150 a year) and I rarely get as excited as I was by your novel. I have already purchased Terminal Mind and I look forward to your next books (especially the sequel to Quintessence). Thanks for providing a wonderful reading experience.

Thanks so much! I’m glad you enjoyed it. I’m doing my best to write many more. I hope you enjoy Terminal Mind as well.

      Best, David

    David!

Are you writing a sequel to Quintessence? Because I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT :O I’m so glad I picked it up while I was at the library last week. Also, I’ve been recommending that book to practically everyone I know.

    1. davidwaltonfiction says:

Yes, I am! In fact, the sequel is already written and sitting on my editor’s desk at Tor. Thanks for spreading the news! The more people buy Quintessence, the more likely it is that Tor will want to publish the sequel. In the meantime, consider trying my first novel, Terminal Mind.

      1. Danita Rizzardo says:

        A sequel? I can’t wait!!!

      2. Sarah says:

Eeek! This is quite exciting! I hope to see it soon! Unfortunately I’m used to waiting years before new books come out 😦

      3. davidwaltonfiction says:

I hope to see it soon, too! At this point, no word from Tor as to when that might be. But you can be sure I’ll let you know.

    Hello Mr. Walton,

I loved your beautiful Quintessence novel.

My name is Macey Tanseco – I don’t know how else to contact you sir, but I’m doing this scavenger hunt with a couple of my friends, GISHWHES (the Greatest International Scavenger Hunt the World Has Ever Seen), and one of the items on the list is:

#78: Get a previously published Sci-Fi author to write an original story (140 words max) about Misha Collins, the Queen of England and an Elopus (elephant/octopus). -Annie Houston

I think it would be really fun and it would be really helpful to our scavenger hunt if you’d help us out. If you can’t, or if this is too ludicrous and rude I apologize, I didn’t mean any rudeness. I just remember your book from the Town Book Center in Collegeivlle/Trappe area. Please shoot me an answer at my email address: cheeselady68@aol.com.

    1. Macey Tanseco says:

I forgot: I think you’d really enjoy trying this challenge out, but if you don’t want to or can’t than it’s alright. If you do though I’d need it by Friday night because that’s when the scavenger hunt ends.

  7. Jeffrey says:

    Hello Mr Walton,
I have enjoyed listening to Quintessence repeatedly, and am a fan of your works. I was wondering if Quintessence Sky and its subsequent works would be available in audio format on Audible.com or any other medium.
    Thank You, Jeffrey

    1. davidwaltonfiction says:

I’m so glad you’ve enjoyed it! I’m sorry to say that Quintessence Sky is not available in audio form, and I don’t expect it to be soon. All my other books (Superposition, Supersymmetry, Terminal Mind) are available in audio form, though. Thanks for reading!

  8. Elyse says:

    Hello Mr. Walton,
I read and enjoyed Terminal Mind for a online class of mine. For a group project we must write a complete essay with many different components. I was assigned author biography, and I was wondering where I could find more information to write about.
    Thanks,
    Elyse

  9. I picked up Quintessence at the dollar store (sorry to tell you this….) But anyway, I will be happy to report I purchased more David Walton novels. What an amazing find! It saddens me this well written artistic beaut shared shelf space with Twilight inducing crap. But best of luck. You are quite the talent young man.

    1. davidwaltonfiction says:

Thank you for your kind words! I hope you’ll check out my latest, The Genius Plague, just out this month.

  10. Andrewarice says:

Good man! That is a good offering for you.

  11. Charlie Spiers says:

I want so badly more of Neil Johns, not a squeal to The Genius Plague, but another book set in that world. Another adventure for the characters! This is the first book I’ve read of David Walton, but suddenly I think I need to take a trip to the bookstore to pick up a few more.

  12. Steve says:

Where has the EPUB version of Genius Plague gone? It doesn’t seem to be available on Amazon or Kobo/Rakuten!

    1. davidwaltonfiction says:

Thank you for the heads up! I didn’t realize it had disappeared. I just fired an email off to the publishers so they can get it resolved as soon as possible.

      1. Steve says:

That did it! I see it now, at least at kobo.com.

Now I’m off to buy, download and read it…

      2. davidwaltonfiction says:

The problem was a switch from Penguin RandomHouse to Simon and Schuster. PRH dropped it too soon, so there was a break in distribution. Thanks for letting me know, and enjoy the book!

  13. James Posey says:

Similar to question above: ‘Genius Plague’ offered today by BookBub or Fussy Librarian, not sure which (sorry, deleted mail). However, no e-version is available in English in Europe at either Amazon nor GooglePlay. Looks very interesting!
